Thank you for your speedy response. Normally, my Nikon D50 (6.1mb) delivers good quality images when printed at A4 and, the colour saturation when printed is very rich. However, I have an opportunity to exhibit some images at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery and, in addition another exhibition at " Alfred East Art Gallery in Kettering. I now realize, that in view of the requirement of larger image presentation in a gallery environment, I need to step up, with a new camera body that will provide a much higher resolution, per your very kind analysis. I noticed a number of floral images, in your web site gallery which, look stunning. I have an eclectic range of images, mostly on a travel theme.

Worth working my way around this site. Well put together.

Thank you for a fascinating and informative web site. Have enjoyed viewing your photos and learning more about digital.

Loved the articles about the old bands. It sort of fills in your knowledge of our profession and the evolution of the big bands. Please have a look at our website. www.myjo.co.uk (The Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra)which shows how we are trying to follow in a great tradition. I am very impressed by the website you set up/did for David Cordey. One of the best I've seen - clear, quick and full of info. Great pics too. If I ever need a website setting up, I now know who to ask. As I'm not a webby, I prefer easy, informative sites, where it is obvious where to click the button etc - sounds mad, but I give up using some sites, they are just too clever for their own good, and show the site builders skill, and wizzardry, first and foremost, rather than being user friendly, and providing easy access to the info I wish to look at.

Great site. A lot of helpful hints for those uf us starting out. Seeing as you know photoshop I have a question for you. When I take photos from my digital camera, resize them to 4 X 5 @ 600 dpi and print them out they are grainy. Are there settings I can adjust to change this? (is this what I"ve heard called diffusion dither?)I do not have the options to select paper type and print quality like you have on your website, but I don't get those options on my Mac for my HP psc1210 printer which has printed great photos for me from less complex programs like iPhoto. Any help is appreciated, as I have a bunch of wedding photos to print off for a family member and they look terrible....

Just looking for details about the Epson Perfection 2450 to see if it would work for me scanning old B&W negatives (3.5x6) taken by my grandparents in the early 20th Century. I have several hundred of them and getting reprints is almost impossible nowadays. I'm also hoping it might work on Civil War-era ambrotypes. Thanks for providing some useful information!

Thanks for your article and thoughts. I have just purchased my Epson 2400 and am really an amateur, with little experience. I needed a scanner that would handle slides, transparencies as well as old family photos up to 100 years old in a range of sizes. Unfortunately my computer operates on SP and so is not Java enabled so some images were unable to be displayed. I have tried to find and download programmes so that I could view these images, but so far without success. Still, it gave me much to think about. Lyn

Thank you for your informative article on scanning negatives with the Epson 2450 scanner. I recently purchased a Nikon N65 and was looking for a reasonable alternative to a dedicated film scanner for ocassional scanning of 35 mm negatives. Oddly enough, few retailers seem to have them in stock right now. I suspect they are about to change models.

You have a great and informative site. It makes digital imaging a lot more fun and vastly more rewarding when you can learn from others and avoid the steep learning curve of trial and error. I prefer the wet process and still do most of my serious work in black and white but this digital stuff is terrific fun. I guess it's the instant gratification that makes it so. While spending the summer in 1959, at our property in the Sierra, I happened across a man with a big tripod and camera, who was photographing a burnt out cedar on our property. I asked if he would't rather photograph one of our waterfalls as it was early summer and the water was still roaring over them from a large snowpack that winter. I told him that I had always wanted to learn photography but my music study took most of my free time. Boy! did he get excited. He told me that he too studied the piano and was headed for a professional career when he discovered photography as a boy on vacation in yosomite. We spent the next few hours, talking music and him teaching me how to see a photograph in the most mundane,[to me] subject. When was leaving he apologized for trespassing and I said he could come back anytime and thanked him for the inspiration about photography and that I probably would start learning about it and go and buy a camera soon, thanks to him. He then wrote his name and phone number on a piece of paper and said if he could help to give him a call anytime. The name on the paper was Ansel Adams and we remained friends until his death. That was my introduction to photography and it has been a lifelong obsession. Thank you for making a new part of it so accessible to digital neophytes like me. Sincerely, Denise Libby P.S. I really appreciated visting your website; the review of the Epson 2450 scanner is very helpful. This e-mail however is to enquire about how I might acquire a copy of the picture of Ilfracombe harbour. My wife and I, with 10 month old baby stayed in one of the hotels in this picture (upper story overlooking the ramp). We spent most of the night taking turns in the car park on the left with a crying/screaming baby, so other guests weren't woken up. Your picture brought back the beauty of Ilfracombe and that truly terrible night!! regards .. David

Just to say that I appreciate the work you have put into your site and the sharing of your views and experience. A fine piece of pro bono. I think I shall have a crack at the Epson 2450 for my Xpan negs. The Medium format alternatives are a quantum leap in price and in the context of the size of image I propose to print, seem disproportionately expensive by comparison. Have you tried scanning both ends of an Xpan frame through a standard 35mm film scanner and then "stitching" the images in Photoshop? This is the solution suggested to me by Hasselblad. Any thoughts on this? Thanks again for the site.

I read your recommendations on your web site, as I have recently purchased an Epson 1280 printer. It was very helpful in properly calibrating my monitor and I appreciate your suggestions. I will be experimenting with Colorlife paper, which I like a lot but have had problems getting the color just right. I noticed that Epson has a download file for that paper for a few printers, including the 1270. Do you know offhand if that would work equally well with the 1280? Thanks, Mark You must use the 2880 profile, which can be found on Epson's Downloads page for the 1280 printer. http://support.epson.com/ SM

Hi Ken, Thanks for your comments. I didn't realise there was a Sutton in USA. I'm glad you enjoyed some of the photos - and yes, they were all taken with my own fair hand. Many were taken in and around Sutton, but quite a lot were taken elsewhere in England, and some in France or other places in Europe. In some of the galleries the location may not always be very clear, but usually I have tried to indicate other place names. The photos on the home page are a mixture, but a couple, such as the boat are in England (south east coast). Sutton, Surrey is a borough of London, so it is quite a "built up" area. Incidentally, I tried to email this message to you, but it was returned "undeliverable" at the address you gave.

Hi Sydney I'm just completing my second reading of your articles, they are excellent-very informative. I am considering the purchase of the Epson 2450 scanner but I have to clarify one thing. The main purpose would be to scan Panoramic pictures done with a Widelux camera, the format is 24mm X 60mm .Do you see any problems with this ? would the pictures be cut at some point- this is the case when I try to scan with my Nikon coolscan 4000. Also , does the scanner have some kind of dust/scratch removal system ? Thank you for your help Rick

ps I found it whilst searching with google for a cheaper supplier of epson cartriges than my local suppliers.

1 question I am having trouble printing mono on the 890 ( I also have a darkroom and the results are no where near as good as chemical printing)Are their specialist inks for mon printing compatible with the epson?
